The Political and Economic Marketplace

On 11th November, 2015, AREU hosted a round table discussion on “The Political and Economic Marketplace.” A presentation by AREU’s Giulia Minoia and ODI’s Ashley Jackson, titled "Rules of the Game", discussed links between political and economic marketplaces. The presentation described how powerful actors and networks of access govern and regulate both economic and political landscapes in Afghanistan. It was argued that technocratic programming solutions brought by the international community have failed to a large extent because they did not take into account the relationship-based reality of how Afghanistan functions. Representatives from Afghanistan government, NGOs and civil society organizations attended the presentation.
