Open dialogue on the role of civil society in promoting good governance

The first open dialogue on the role of civil society in promoting good governance was organised on 8 October 2015. Its purpose was to share key findings of AREU’s study on the role of Afghan civil society in constructively contributing to the decision-making process and promoting accountability and transparency of the government; to identify challenges and opportunities for civil society in keeping the government accountable, transparent and responsive to the needs of the population; and finally, to generate and compile ideas and suggestions on how the involvement of civil society in Afghan decision-making process could be enhanced.
The discussion also touched on how to contribute to the further development of good governance in Afghanistan.
Civil society actors and specialists from AREU discussed the role of different civil society organisations in bringing the voices of the people into the political decision-making, contributing to the government decision-making process, opportunites and challenges for civil society in keeping the government accountable and responsive to needs of people. They then came up with recommendations on how to further involve civil society in Afghan government decision-making.
