Migration, Environment and Social Sustainability.

As part of a three-day conference on the impact of the on-going structural transformation in South Asia that took place 20-22 May 2015, Dr Chona Echavez, Deputy Director of Research at Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit (AREU), co-chaired a panel titled “Migration, Environment and Social Sustainability.” The event was organised and hosted by Lund University’s Sociology Department in Lund, Sweden. The conference discussions were divided into six different panels, each focusing on a separate theme. The panel Dr Echavez participated in was organised around the issues of migration and transnationalism, the environment and social sustainability. Her paper examined motivations for the departure of unaccompanied children to Europe and other industrialised countries from the perspective of children, families and residents of communities of origin. Hopefully, these studies will unpack the issues involved and bring to light further knowledge and understanding of the specific circumstances covered in the studies. Such knowledge may serve to inform future policies and strategic planning on specific issues tackled in the study. This activity was undertaken as part of AREU’s strategic plan in order to achieve the objective of decimating research finding with a wide range of audiences outside the country.
