Federalism in Australia and Options for Sri Lanka

Federalism in Australia and Options for Sri Lanka

At the invitation of Professor Ghizaal Haress, Aruni Jayakody, Governance Programs Officer, presented a lecture on “Federalism in Australia and Options for Sri Lanka” to the Advanced Constitutional Law Class at the American University of Afghanistan. Aruni’s presentation focused on the structure of federalism in Australia, and how it has fared over the last century. Then she presented on how federalism has been discussed as a policy measure that could facilitate a solution to the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. The lecture served to help students think about an assignment they were undertaking on what options suited Afghanistan best: a unitary, decentralised or federal structure. The students were well informed about the topic, and engaged in a  robust discussion with Aruni on the viability of a federal solution for Afghanistan.
